RUTH ALLEN


Mrs. Allen is in her 31st year of teaching band.  She is in charge of all aspects of the Hornedo MS Band program and directs the Honor Band, Concert Band and Beginning Woodwinds.  Under her direction her bands are consistent in receiving sweepstakes at UIL Concert/Sightreading contests, Band Festivals and Jazz Festivals.  Her bands have also received "Best in Class" in festivals held in San Antonio, Dallas and California.  Recently the Honor Band placed 3rd at Area for the TMEA  State Honor Band Competition.


Mrs. Allen's main instrument is clarinet.  She received her Bachelor in Music Performance from West Texas State University. She played under the direction of Dr. Gary Garner and studied clarinet with Robert Spring and Doug Story.  She is a graduate of Riverside High School in El Paso.  She studied clarinet with Maria Chadwell and Vin Richards and is a two time Texas All State Clarinetist.  She was a member of the El Paso Wind Symphony where she served as principal clarinetist, played with the Amarillo Symphony and teaches clarinet privately. Mrs. Allen is an active judge and clinician in El Paso and throughout Texas and New Mexico.


Mrs. Allen's professional affiliations include: Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association, Phi Beta Mu and Texas Band Masters Association where she serves on the Spouse's Board.

Mrs. Allen is married to Daniel Allen, Band Director at Murphree PK-8 and is currently serving as President of the Texas Bandmasters Association.   Their son Christopher plays horn and piano. He recently graduated from UTEP with a music education degree and and will continue his education as a Master's student in conducting.  Their daughter Lauren is in the 11th grade at Franklin HS, plays the clarinet and is also a member of the choir. She has made All Region in both band and choir since 7th grade and has advanced to Area for both as well.  Lauren also made the Texas All State Choir and will perform at TMEA in February.






Mr. Ontiveros is in his 3rd year as the Hornedo MS Assistant Band Director.  He is in charge of the Symphonic Band, Beginning Brass and the Jazz Band.  Under his direction, the Jazz Band recieved 1st place at the Hanks Jazz Festival in 2022. in the MS category. Also, the Jazz Band has been chosen as the TMEA Invited MS Jazz Band for the 2023 Convention and will perform in February.  


He is a graduate from The University of Texas at El Paso with a Bachelor of Degree in Music Education. While at UTEP he was a Presidential Excellence Scholar and graduated with the honor Cum Laude. Mr. Ontiveros played trumpet in the UTEP Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Jazz Band I & II.  He also participated in the UTEP Trumpet Ensemble where he had the opportunity to compete and perform at the National Trumpet Competition and International Trumpet Guild Conference. He received the Outstanding Student Award in Arts and Humanities presented by the Texas Board of Regents in 2018. 


Mr. O grew up in a musical family where he developed a passion for music and the trumpet at a young age. He views music as a getaway for one to be creative and express emotions that cannot be described in words.  He is also a private trumpet instructor.  He enjoys sharing his knowledge of trumpet and music with local students with whom he helps prepare for local auditions and competitions.  His goal while at Hornedo is to impact the lives of all of his students by sharing his knowledge and passion for music.
