Head Director- John Groves

Mr. Groves is a graduate of Coronado High school and Baylor University where he holds a Bachelor of Music Education and Master of Music.  He has been teaching music since 1979.  He has been assistant principal Horn in the El Paso Symphony Orchestra for over 30 years and is Principal Horn of the El Paso Opera.  He is also a member of the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra.   Mr. Groves is going in his 10th year teaching at Hornedo.  His duties include: Director of Honor Band, Jazz 1 and Brass/Percussion Beginners.  He assists with Symphonic Band and Jazz 2.

Assistant Director- Ruth Allen

Mrs. Allen is in her fifth year at Hornedo MS.  Her duties include:  Director of the Symphonic Band, Jazz 2 and Woodwind Beginners.  She also assists with  Honor Band and Jazz 1.

Ruth Allen is in her 26th year of teaching band .  She is a 1987 graduate of Riverside HS and a two time Texas All State Clarinetist.  She graduated from West Texas A&M University in 1992 with a Music Performance Degree and Certification in Music Education.  Mrs. Allen's teaching career includes being the assistant band director at Cooper HS in Abilene TX, Wiggs MS, Lincoln MS, Valley View MS and head band director at Eastwood MS. 

Mrs. Allen’s band have consistently received 1st divisions and sweepstakes at local band festivals and UIL concert/sight-reading contests for the past 25 years. Bands under her direction have been named “Best in Class” at Music in the Parks and DC Music Festivals in San Antonio, Dallas and Anaheim, CA.  In 2002 while at Valley View MS, the Honor Band placed among the top 14 bands at the TMEA 3C Honor Band Competition.  Mrs. Allen is an active judge and clinician.  She has been the All Region clinician for the ATSSB Region 22 MS Band and Ruidoso NM.  She also judges in local Solo/Ensemble competitions, local Concert/Sight-reading festivals and UIL Concert and Sight-reading contests.  She has been panel chair and judges on the 5A All State clarinet panel at TMEA.  Mrs. Allen is the Region 22 TMEA MS Region Chair. Her professional affiliations include: Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmasters Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and Phi Beta Mu.  She is also serving on the Spouses Board of the Texas Band Masters Association where her husband is on the Board of Directors as Secretary.

Mrs. Allen is married to Daniel Allen who is one of the band directors at Franklin HS.  They have two children. Christopher is a senior at Franklin HS and plays horn and piano. Lauren is in the 6th grade at Hornedo MS.  She plays clarinet in the beginning band.
